Are Life Coaches The Psychiatrists Of The 21st Century?

May 7th, 2008 JohnHoritz Posted in Self Help | No Comments »

There are millions of students world-wide enrolled in psychology degree programs at this very moment. Spending years of their lives learning basic structures and principles of how the human mind processes feelings and events. Do all people actually fit into the framework of a set standard?

A fairly new phenomenon is starting to sweep across the globe, Life coaching. This reasonably new form of coaching ties its roots to executive coaching. The basic aim is to help realize, time-line, and achieve your personal goals. Sounds simple enough to do on our own, doesn’t it?

When you take into consideration the normal work load of an up and coming professional and then add to it the daily stress of everyday life, some aspect of his/her life will suffer.

This is where our life coach can become useful. Unlike psychologists, sociologists, and other degree holders, life coaches try to find the answers from within the person.

There are four self-accreditation bodies that are internationally recognized: the International Coaching Council (ICC), the International Coach Federation (ICF), the International Association of Coaching (IAC), and the European Coaching Institute (ECI). Each of these is privately-owned and is not monitored by an independent supervisory board.

They do, however, all follow the same industry standard. Mentoring, behavior modification, and goal-setting, are the core values of their teachings.

Many successful persons in the business world are believers in the positive affect that life coaching offers. We employ coaching strategies into most aspects of our daily lives. It can be as simple as a plan for the supermarket, progressing into something as intricate as a 10-year plan for our future.

In most psycho analytic professions, the past and why we are who we are is the main focus. Life coaching, on the other hand, looks into the clients’ future and tries to help them become the person they want to be.

The main plan of most life coaches is to ask their clients questions and teach them how to find the answer from within themselves. The majority of coaches believe that the persons they mentor have the tools to achieve their individual goals, but are focusing too much energy in the wrong places.

To simplify all of this into easier terms: imagine yourself as a car and your life coach as your steering wheel, you are the one in control of how fast or slow you go. Does that make sense to you?

Now, think of your career, your family, your goals, your successes, and your failures, as the road that lies ahead. Every road that we drive on always has hills and some bumps, but the majority of us always make it to our final destination just fine.

This is where a good life coach comes in handy again. It’s a good idea to have someone in the passenger seat when the road in our life comes to a fork. Do you turn right or do you turn left? Your mentor is there to help you understand what lies down each of those roads, but to let you make the decision for yourself which one to take.

Calibration For Business Using Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP

May 7th, 2008 ShawnCarson Posted in Self Help | No Comments »

Calibration in Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP refers to the skill of observing and listening for the unconscious responses that the people around us (whether business clients, suppliers, colleagues, subordinates) offer us.

These unconscious responses offer clues as to the thoughts that are passing through the mind of the other person. By noticing these clues, we gain insight that can help us to communicate with both the conscious and unconscious mind, and become more influential.

WHAT IS THERE TO CALIBRATE?

Surely we are not suggesting that a client, sitting in her own office, will reveal her unconscious thoughts to us? Yes, she will and she does!

We should firstly be aware that people reveal their unconscious thoughts when they are emotionally invested in what they are discussing. Often when people are discussing purely business issues they become more guarded, or more “consciously minded”, or otherwise more difficult to read. Therefore it is easier to read unconscious response when we lead a person to become emotionally invested in what they are discussing. In a business environment, this means that we should ask questions such as:

• What does this mean to you?

• Is this important to you?

• What will you get out of this?

When we ask questions that relate to how a project will affect a person individually, we are much more likely to get unconscious response.

UNCONSCIOUS CLUES

So what would we be looking and listening for, to allow us to calibrate in NLP terms, when we meet with a client? Here are some of the major clues that may reveal unconscious process:

EYE MOVEMENTS

The way a person’s eyes move can tell us what they are thinking. “Eye accessing cues” as they are called are taught as part of any Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner Course.

Essentially we tend to move our eyes a certain way, when we think in a certain way. By calibrating to how the person in front of us thinks (whether a business colleague of a client) we can begin to recognize how they are thinking as we watch their eyes move.

PREDICATES

Predicates refers to the type of words that we use when we speak. In terms of Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP, we theorize as follows: if a person says, “I see what you mean” it implies that they are seeing a picture. If they say, “That sounds right” then they are judging by hearing.

As we listen, really listen; to the words others use, we may begin to notice how they are thinking.

OTHER CLUES TO SENSORY PROCESSES

Several other clues can help us to understand how the other person is thinking. These clues may include:

• Breathing

• Posture

• Gestures

• Voice tone

• Speed of speech

GESTURES

The gestures that a person uses indicate where they locate certain things in their map of the world. You will begin to notice that an individual consistently gestures a certain way when talking about a certain thing. This is not random gesturing; it has real meaning for that person.

ANALOGUE MARKING

People, whether in business or otherwise, tend to mark out words that are important to them. They may do so by, for example:

• Gesturing on certain words

• Adding additional tonal stress to a certain word

• Breathing at a different rate (or sighing) on a certain word

As an example, a student talks about a resourceful state that she felt. At the same time she makes a gesture by her side of rocking her hand, a universal signal for “I’m not sure”. Noticing this we asked her if this was really the resourceful state she wanted to access, and she said no, there was a much better one.

CONCLUSION

As we begin to notice these unconscious cues, we arm ourselves with ammunition that allow us to uncover the real reasons our business clients and colleagues do the things they do.

How we use this ammunition will be the content for another article!

The Neuro Linguistic Programming Coaching Model – A Tool For Coaches

May 7th, 2008 ShawnCarson Posted in Self Help | No Comments »

Neuro Linguistic Programming is a great tool for use in personal coaching, business coaching and life coaching. The question is, how do we use Neurolinguistic Programming NLP in a coaching environment?

In fact, neurolinguistic programming NLP is a very natural tool for use in coaching because it relies on a very simple model for personal change. This is a model which is used by anyone who enjoyed personal change, self improvement, etc, and by innumerable coaches everywhere.

THE NEUROLINGUISTIC PROGRAMMING COACHING MODEL

The basic pattern of Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP is as follows:

• Associate into the problem state

• Dissociate from the problem state

• Associate into the resource state

• Take the resource state to the problem state

Given a real understanding of this pattern, it becomes easy to apply in any coaching situation:

• What is the problem that the coaching client has? Are you able to get them to experience that state? If not see below.

• Can we dissociate from the problem state? How do we do this? If we can’t do this, what can we do? See below for answers to this question.

• What resource do we need to solve the problem?

• As we feel those resources, how is the problem different now?

ASSOCIATING INTO THE PROBLEM STATE

It is common for a coaching client to enter a coaching session in the problem state. However, they don’t always do so. For example they may be so cerebral that they are not able to easily enter the problem state.

Here is an easy way to associate the client into the problem state:

• When did you last feel this?

• When exactly was this?

• Where did it take place?

• What were yo seeing, hearing and feeling at that time and place?

By doing this we can begin to associate the client into the problem state.

DISSOCIATING FROM THE PROBLEM STATE

Dissociating from the problem state is normally relatively easy.

The simplest way is to ask the client how they want to be different.

Sometimes a coaching client may find it difficult to dissociate from the problem state. This is where neuro linguistic programming offers valuable tools for dissociating from the problem state. The tools which NLP offers include:

• Dissociating in space (e.g. over here - over there)

• Dissociating in time (then - now)

• Dissociating is size (that small you – this you)

• Use of metaphor (that person in the story – you)

EXAMPLE

A client walks into your office, complaining that he feels nervous when he has to make a public speech. “I get kinda nervous, it bugs me that I act this way” he says.

You notice that he has not satisfied the first step of the NeuroLinguistic Programming pattern, in that he is talking about his problem, so he is not associated into it.

“When was the last time you felt this way?” you ask. “Oh. Last week I had to give a speech it was horrible!” “Where were you, precisely?” “I was in our big conference room…I saw the faces of our clients…” You see his face fall. Now he is associated into the experience.

“And that’s how you’ve been. How do you want to be?” you ask. You notice his physiology change as he dissociates from the problem state.

“I’d rather be confident”. “And what’s it like when you confident?” “Oh that’s a real rush, I feel great!” You notice his physiology and voice tone change. Now he is associated into the resource state. Time to collapse the states.

“And as you feel that great, notice the faces of your clients in the big conference room…”

CONCLUSION

The coaching pattern is a fundamental NLP skill that we teach on our Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner training here in New York.

The Philosophy And Ethics Of Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP

May 7th, 2008 ShawnCarson Posted in Self Help | No Comments »

Neuro Linguistic Programming NLP was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder from studying three leading therapists, Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls. Since then it has become a leading toll in business management, sales, education, training, personal coaching and sports as well as therapy and many other areas.

NLP AS PHILOSOPHY

However NLP can also be viewed as a life philosophy. In particular, NLP can be used to help us decide how we should live our lives (i.e. ethics), the nature of reality (metaphysics) and the nature of knowledge (i.e. epistemology).

The remainder of this article discusses the philosophy of Neuro Linguistic Programming, focusing in particular on the NLP Presuppositions.

NLP PRESUPPOSITIONS

NLP can itself be viewed as an epistemology, in the sense that it has basic presuppositions upon which the rest of the discipline is built. The detailed presuppositions vary depending upon the teacher, author, or school of NLP with which one is dealing with, although most are common to all practitioners.

Common Neurolinguistic Presupposition include:

1. The map is not the territory.

2. Everyone lives in their own unique model of the world.

3. The positive worth of an individual is held constant; it is only behavior which may not be appropriate.

4. Every behavior has a positive intention.

It should be noted that the Presuppositions of NLP are not deemed to be true or false. They are considered to be useful in doing therapy or simply living our lives.

THE ETHICS OF NLP

You will note from the above presuppositions that NLP puts value on the individual, irrespective of the behavior that they may be engaged in at any particular time. This is a vital belief for a therapist who may be treating a disturbed individual, who engages in self destructive or otherwise negative behavior.

In fact, valuing the other as an individual is the basis of many ethical and religious systems.

In addition, not only does each individual have a constant positive worth, each behavior has a positive intention. So even when someone does something that could really annoy us, by believing that they have a positive intention we give ourselves permission to think the best and move on without experiencing anger. Someone cuts you off in traffic, you can get mad, or you can wonder what emergency they are going to, or what other issues they have in their life that make them behave in that way.

NLP teaches us that each individual has their own map or model of the world, which is unique to that individual. In NLP we are taught to respect those maps. So, when we meet another person, we can be respectfully curious about their map of the world, curious about their beliefs and values, curious about how they see things, and what they feel.

NLP actually goes further than this. It tells us that the map is not the territory. That our map is not reality. Not just other people’s map, but our map as well. It tells us that we have no monopoly on being right, and in fact we are by definition wrong, at least to the extent that we think we’re right!

CONCLUSION

As we study NLP and take the Presuppositions of NLP to heart, we will begin to respect other people and ourselves more. Knowing that each person has a unique map allows us the space to accept and even value the differences that exist.

We can also begin to accept our own weaknesses as we separate our behavior from our identity. This gives us the ability to look at our own weaknesses with empathy and know that we can change them without losing our self.

Don’t Do It, Don’t Do It, And Other Things Guys Say When You Are Getting Married

May 7th, 2008 HusbandOf Posted in Relationships | No Comments »

It seems that women (of course I am generalizing) have getting married in a fairy tale wedding as a goal in life.

Men on the other hand seem to kind of wind up getting married because thats the next thing to do. Or they can’t hold off their long term girlfriend/finance’ any longer and just concede that its time .

Most men spend very little time thinking about getting married right up until the time that they suddenly find themselves (even if it was years in the making it still seemed sudden) yup getting married.

Now back to women it seems that women become focused on finding their future husband and getting a big diamond engagement ring going on tour showing everybody their new sparkler and then really starting the planning of their aforementioned fairy tale wedding complete with their ideal gown/cake/bridesmaids/caterer/music/flowers/center pieces etc…

I am of course forgetting the bridal shower and registering for gifts photographers guests lists and honeymoon. The Bride to be has all these things to focus on while of course preparing for the wedding extravaganza and dreaming of what her long imagined and now much planned day will turnout.

(perfect she imagines)

The poor groom to be either “gets” to help in some of these wedding tasks or just gets the constant updates and deals with the bride to be’s ups and downs as the process unfolds. If he’s fortunate he may have the diversion of a bachelor party but he must act like he isn’t excited about attending the party (maybe even say he would rather be with her) Nonetheless the groom does get to chat with all his old friends and some relatives that he likes(and some he might barely know or not like at all) as the wedding approaches.

He most likely runs across some fellows who have survived the whole wedding thing and are actually married men. Here it comes you guessed it These married gents when told that you are getting married nervously laugh and reply in a joking tone Don’t Do It Don’t Do It!

They then laugh it off as a little joke shake hands congratulate you and seem genuinely interested in the particulars and say they can’t wait. Good Luck. This scenario brings up a bunch of questions and some issues which we will try to address.

1 Are those guys really joking when the say don’t do it?

2 Are woman set up for a huge let down when they have reached their dreamed of goal of getting the ring the Gown the Wedding and the Husband?

3 If the answer to #1 and 2 are yes what does that mean about the subsequent marriage?

Oh yeah thats right the purpose of going through a wedding be it simple or elaborate is to unite 2 people in marriage. The problem often is what are they supposed to do then?

How do you make a marriage work?

How do you avoid joining the huge and growing ranks of the divorced? I don’t believe that women spent much of their wedding dream actually thinking about what married life will be like and boom now they find themselves married.

Men (me being one of them) certainly don’t think through much if any details of what it takes to make a marriage work prior to finding themselves married. They just don’t. Based on the above the question becomes how can couples make it work, keep it together, become happy married couples that love each other and love to be with each other as true loving partners?

How do they do it? Especially after the original excitement and sexual heat cools a bit? Well one way to give your relationship its best opportunity to not only survive but thrive is to invest in your relationship invest in each other by joining the members of OURDATENIGHT.COM and enhanceing your chances of actually creating a great marriage.

As a half drunk best man once shared with the wedding party during his eloquent toast ” May all your ups and downs be between the sheets”

Manifesting Something From Nothing On A Consistent Basis

May 7th, 2008 TimWhiston Posted in Self Help | No Comments »

It sounds complex, even mystical. But the truth is we do it every time we open our eyes in the morning.

The world around us and the events in our lives have a great deal to do with how we think and feel. In essence we are individually and collectively creating reality with each passing moment.

Science today tells us the same thing ancient philosophers wrote in their journals: Everything in our world comes from a subatomic void of formless energy.

By subatomic, I mean existing at a level “below” atoms and particles. And by formless energy I refer to the energy field that flow between, into, and through all things living and inanimate.

Sound like hocus-pocus? Some of the world’s leading scientists don’t think so.

The fact is everything we see, touch, and imagine (because thoughts are measurable energy waves) spring forth from this field of intangible energy. So what we perceive as “real” is scientifically proven to be no more substantial in nature than what we only think about.

This can be unsettling for some people. But I choose to be empowered by the idea.

Science is finding that our powers of thought are very much in tune with the same amazing force that causes the grass to grow and the earth to rotate on its axis! How’s that for a head-trip?

When you really give this its proper frame of reference, how ridiculous do the things you spend your day fretting over seem? If you possess a power (of thought), which works within the same parameters as the very fabric of the universe, why not just change your life and the world around you to suit your preference?

Surely we have all enjoyed those experiences whereby events in our life were preceded by powerful thoughts and intentions. Often we write these occurrences off as flukes, but are they really?

I don’t think so! And I urge you not to be so quick to dismiss your creative powers, unless you just enjoy living a powerless life and want more things to complain about.

At the very least, put a significant amount of personal research into the matter before writing it off. Closely observe your thoughts and feelings over a six-month period, and see how the events around you correspond precisely with your thinking and with your emotional state.

And when you notice an alarming proportion, ask yourself this question: What if I choose what I think and feel in an effort to manipulate my life’s events in a manner I most desire?

Try this as a second experiment for six months.

Non-believers who put an honest effort into the above exercises will be pleasantly shocked and enlightened. The fact is you can have a direct and predictable impact on the events in your life by focusing your thoughts and emotions on the outcomes you prefer.

Of course you can and do have a predictable impact on your life even without trying. The world responds to your input whether you believe it or not, and the things that happen to or for you are the result of your thinking and emotions.

So why not decide to control your mind and project only the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled?
